It is past time for politicians and "movers and shakers" to tell the public the often-uncomfortable truths. In an article telling the truth about our dependence on foreign oil, Jimmy Carter is quoted as saying, "this nation will never use more foreign oil than we did under Nixon." Under Nixon we imported 36%, under Carter, we imported 40.5% of our oil. Currently, we import over 60% of our oil.
Face it. We pay for imported energy security with aircraft carriers, anti terrorism measures, environmental degradation, and most tragically, military and civilian lives. To keep prices at the pump low, they are low compared to almost all other nations, we need governments cooperation to develop our own resources, yes, fossil fuels included, because mining our own fossil resources is far cheaper and less subsidized than solar power, wind power, ethanol, etc. And fossil resources are plentiful in this country with more discoveries every month.
We have the capacity to match our foreign competitors but do we have the will? I expect we might see some changes after November but I am not overly optimistic as the radical environmentalists are contesting fossil fuel development every step of the way and over many years.
It will take decades to come up with noticable amounts of alternate energy. The public must be told this truth.
