An Interesting Economic Plan from the Feb 7th 2009 edition of the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on "How Would You Fix the economy?" Here is one reader's opinion:
Forwarded to me. I don't know if 40 million times 1 million equals $400 billion or 40 trillion. All tjhose zeros just confuse me so I'll take the writers word for it and you can correct us on this site.
Dear Mr. President,
Patriotic retirement:
There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force - Pay them $1 million a piece severance (total cost a mere $400 billion) with the following stipulations:
1) They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed..
2) They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.
3) They either buy a house/pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.
It can't get any easier than that!

Sorry, because I like the concept, but 40 million times 1 million is 40 TRILLION. If we also kicked them off Social Security, it might still work.
Well if you kicked me off of Social Security I would be another old lady living under the bridge. We worked and pain into social security all our lives, why should we lose it? I like the idea of the one million dollar retirement, but it would never fly. Too many fingers in the pie to make it equal.
Sorry, but all the money you paid into SS is gone. All SS has are a bunch of IOUs. The only way SS can collect on those IOUs is if the "other pocket" of the same government's pants taxes even more or prints more fiat money.
